Background:

I took my undergraduate courses in Bicol University of Legazpi and graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. I am licensed as a Chemist in the Philippines after taking and passing the Philippine Regulatory Commission’s licensure exam.

Presently, I am a master’s student at the University of Queensland taking Master of Molecular Biology 32 unit program. I was interested in Organic chemistry and Biochemistry and decided to join the Fairlie group for my research project to learn and practice chemistry. I am currently doing an 8 unit research project under the supervision of Jeffrey Mak (PhD) and Prof. David Fairlie.

My project aim is to successfully  synthesize MR1 ligand analogues to investigate which part of MR1 protein’s natural ligands are necessary for binding. MR1 covalently bonds to its natural ligand and presents it as an antigen to MAIT cells to activate it and induce an appropriate immune response. We expect these new ligand analogues to give us fresh information and understanding of MR1 binding and upregulation.
